Overview
Morigaon district is one of the districts of Assam, located in the central part of the state. The district headquarters is at Morigaon town, situated on the bank of the Kolong River. The district is known for its rich natural beauty, cultural heritage, and the world-famous Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to the densest population of the great Indian one-horned rhinoceros.
Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for the majority of the population. Major crops include rice, jute, mustard, and pulses. The district also has significant fisheries, horticulture, and livestock activities. Traditional crafts, handloom weaving, and bamboo-cane works are widely practiced in rural areas. Morigaon is also culturally significant, with Mayong—known as the "Land of Black Magic"—being a popular historical and mythological attraction.
How to reach
By Road
Morigaon is well connected by road to Guwahati and other major towns of Assam. National Highway 37 (NH-37) and state highways link the district with Nagaon, Jagiroad, and other nearby towns. Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) and private buses operate regularly to and from Morigaon.
By Train
The district has only Jagiroad Railway Station which is well connected to Guwahati and other important towns. Regular passenger and express trains make Morigaon easily accessible by rail.
By Air
The nearest airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati, located about 90 km from Morigaon district headquarters. The airport is connected to major Indian cities and also has international flights.
