                                                                                                         Mrs. Junuma Mali

Hailing from Dandua village, Mrs. Junuma Mali is an inspiration for all the dairy farmers of Morigaon district. Mrs. Mali started her dairy farming with just 1 milch cow producing only 2-4 lts/day of milk of Lakhimi breed in 2015. Her inquisitive personality and curious mind led her to attend several trainings under A.H and Veterinary Department, Morigaon and RSETI, because of which today she houses a herd of 17 cattle providing comfortable scientific housing and feeding. In the last 3 months, the milk production has been approximately 7280lts. The milking is carried out using specific machineries in her farm.Mrs. Junuma Mali produces feed independently at her own residence. Located adjacent to her residence, her paddy fields also harvest crops of Maize, Napier, Rina and guinea which becomes helpful in providing feed to the herd all around the year and also in times of flood. The harvest is boon to the people of her village as well, as she supplies feed to the livestock of her fellow farmers every year at times of need.

Mrs. Junuma Mali has followed scientific method of housing for her herd. On the advice of District A.H & Veterinary Office, Morigaon she has been following the tail-to-tail system of housing for her livestock. It helps to reduce the spread of many diseases. Mrs. Junuma also ensures regular vaccination of her cattle herd. Every animal above 3 months of age is vaccinated with Foot and Mouth vaccine and timely dewormed on the advice of the Veterinary Officer of the jurisdiction. On visit of the District A.H. and Veterinary team Morigaon, it was found that every cattle in her farm wears an ear tag, a practice which is praiseworthy.

Mrs. Junuma Mali supports her family by selling milk and milk products through Dandua Dairy Cooperative Society. Mrs. Junuma Mali’s journey is commendable, she has been awarded the prestigious National Gopal Ratna Award 2024, in the “Best Dairy farmer rearing indigenous cattle/buffalo breeds” category. Her attitude towards implementing scientific methods in aspects of dairy farming is applaudable.
