Introduction :
Office of the District Sports Officer was established in 1991 in Morigaon district. Late Khirud Baruah was instrumental in the establishment of the District Sports Office, Morigaon, at its present location. From 1991 to 2001 it was financially supervised by the District Sports Office, Nagaon. After 2001, the District Sports Office, Morigaon functioned independently from District Sports Office, Nagaon. At present, the Department is implementing various initiatives in the field of sports, which include the establishment and operation of Khelo India Centres, the conduct of the 'Khel Maharan' tournament scheme aimed at selection of players from the grassroot level, and the Playfield Infrastructure Development Project under "Chief Minister's Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojana (CMSGUY)".
Vision :
The vision of The District Sports Office, Morigaon is to bring about social transformation by promoting sports and spreading awareness of sports across different sections of the society, resulting in character building and inclusive development. It focuses on the all-round development of body, mind and health of the youth and common citizen of the District. An individual self-esteem, confidence and ability to deal with stress effectively is one of the major building blocks of a community and nation and therefore, the Department emphasises on identifying and nurturing sporting talent in the district giving them the opportunity to shine and excel in the global sports arena by creating a sports centric ecosystem.
Objective:
1. The major objective of the department was to vigorously pursue and implement the scheme of physical education training which was introduced earlier in some of the Schools of the district. For this purpose the activities of the physical instructors who were posted in a number of High Schools all over the district were frequently monitored.
2. The Department also gave emphasis on scouting of talents and imparting coaching programmes for the budding sportsmen in different sports disciplines for improvement of their skills. For this purpose a total number of 11 Physical Instructor and 1 coach are appointed in different sports disciplines.
Ongoing Schemes under District Sports Office, Morigaon
1. Chief Minister's Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojana (CMSGUY)
- Under this scheme 11 Nos. of Playfield development work throughout the district is going on.
- Six Nos. of playfield development work has been completed and Seven Nos of playfield development work is going on.
2. Khel Maharan 1.0 and 2.0
- Under this scheme players from grassroot level i.e Gaon Panchayat level were selected and went through LAC to District level and District level team for different Sports disciplines was prepared for State level tournament.
- Khel Maharan 1.0 focused on Sports discipline including Volleyball, Football, Kho-Kho, Kabbadi, Athletics.
- In this segement of Khel Maharan 1.0 players from Morigaon brough accolades in State level tournament in the discipline of Volleyball and Athletics. The Volleyball U19 men team was champion in state level and in athletics ‘Sangeeta Bordoloi’ won the Gold medal in A19, 800 M category race.
- Khel Maharan 2.0 focused on Sports discipline including Volleyball, Football, Cycling, Kabbadi, Athletics, Swimming and Chess.
- In this segement of Khel Maharan 2.0 ‘Dream Mahanta’ won gold medal in cycling U-14 boys category and the Volleyball U-17 boys category won Silver medal (runners up) in State level competition.
3. Small Khelo India Centre
- Khelo India centers are part of the Larger Khelo India program, which aims to revive the sports culture in India at the grassroots level. These centers provide infrastructure and training to nurture young sporting talent across the country. Interested players can train under these centre free of cost
- Morigaon District has Two Khelo India centres namely ‘Rana coaching centre (Football)’ and ‘Charan beel kayaking and canoeing centre’
4. Chief Minister's Tea Tribe football tournament
- The CM Tea Tribe Football is an annual football tournament in Assam, India, organized by the Directorate of Tea Tribes & Adivasi Welfare and Sports & Youth Welfare to promote sports among young tea garden communities, featuring Under-17 (U-17) and other categories, with district-level matches happening across the state in late 2025 as part of the 2025-26 season to nurture local talent.
- In Morigaon district it was held at Gopal Krishna tea estate.
