INTRODUCTION
The Department of Women and Child Development (WCD) is a government body that focuses on the welfare, development, empowerment of women and children. The department plays a key role in implementing policies, programs, and schemes aimed at improving the social and economic status of women, ensuring child protection and prompting child development.
MISSION AND VISION OF THE DEPARTMENT
The mission of the Women and Child Development (WCD) Department is to promote the holistic development, empowerment, and protection of women and children. It strives to create an environment where women can achieve social and economic empowerment while ensuring the survival, health, nutrition, education, and overall well-being of children, especially those in the early childhood stage. The department is committed to safeguarding women and children from exploitation, neglect, and abuse, while also addressing the needs of vulnerable and marginalized groups. Through the implementation of welfare schemes, development programs, and protective measures, the WCD Department aims to build an inclusive society where women and children can live with dignity, security, and equal opportunities.
The Department of Women and Child Development (WCD) runs several schemes and programs aimed at the welfare, protection, and empowerment of women and children. These schemes focus on nutrition, health, education, safety, and economic upliftment. Here’s an overview of the major schemes:
1. SCHEMES FOR CHILD DEVELOPMENT
Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS): Provides immunization,supplementary nutrition programme,non-formal preschool education, health check-ups, nutrition and health education, and referral services to children under 6 years and their mothers through Anganwadi centers.
POSHAN Abhiyaan (National Nutrition Mission):
Focuses on reducing malnutrition, stunting, anemia, and low birth weight among children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers.
2. SCHEMES FOR WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
Mission Shakti is a comprehensive program launched by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD), Government of India, to ensure the safety, security, and empowerment of women. It brings together various existing schemes for women under two main sub-schemes: “Sambal” and “Samarthya”, aiming to create an integrated and holistic support system.
Mission Shakti has two sub-schemes:
- Sambal (Safety and Security of Women)
Focuses on protection and assistance to women in distress.
Includes:
One Stop Centre (OSC)/Sakhi Centre: – Provides integrated support and assistance to women facing violence, including police, medical, legal, and counseling services under one roof.
Shakti Sadan Scheme: -Provides shelter, food, clothing, counseling, and training for women in difficult circumstances, like widows or victims of violence.
Women Helpline (181)– 24×7 emergency support.
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP):– Aims to prevent gender-biased sex selection and promote education and empowerment of the girl child.Focus on saving and educating the girl child.
b. Samarthya (Empowerment of Women)
Focuses on social, economic, and skill empowerment of women.
Includes:
District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW)– Supports guidance, linkage and hand-holding of women to various institutional and schematic set ups for their empowerment and development.
Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) – Provides financial assistance to pregnant and lactating women for the first live birth to support health and nutrition.
Creche and Anganwadi Services– Support for children of working women.
3. CHILD PROTECTION SCHEMES
Childline (1098):A 24-hour emergency helpline for children in distress.
Juvenile Justice Services and ICPS (Integrated Child Protection Scheme):Ensures care, protection, and rehabilitation of vulnerable children, including orphans and street children.
These schemes work together to create a protective and supportive ecosystem where women can lead empowered lives and children can grow in a safe and nurturing environment.
