       The Public Works Department (PWD) is one of the oldest and most important Department of Government of Assam. It was established in the year 1880 under British Rule. At the beginning it had the responsibility for all public infrastructure development involving construction and maintenance works. In 1956 the Embankment and Drainage (E&D) was bifurcated and established as a separate Department.

         PWD Deptt. has undergone considerable changes since Independence. To enable it to function smoothly and to focus on the priority assigned by the Government on infrastructure development works, PWD Deptt. was further bifurcated into two departments in 2010, the PWD(Road) and Public Works Building & NH Department to better focus on development work and distribute the increasing workload.

                                                     FUNCTION AND OBJECTIVES

        The principal function of Public Works Roads Department (PWRD) is to develop and manage the state road infrastructure for providing connectivity and efficient transportation. It undertakes construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, culverts in the state.

       Public Works Roads Department (PWRD) in Assam, India aims to improve and maintain the state’s road infrastructure. The PWRD’s objectives include:-

  1. Road connectivity: Provide uninterrupted road connectivity to important places and habitation.

  2. Road Safety:  Implement road safety measures.

  3. Road Maintenance:  Improve the Road maintenance system.

  4. Road Quality:  Research to improve the quality of roads.

  5. Road Construction:  Construct bridges and all weather roads.

  6. Road widening:  Widening and strengthening road into state highways and major district roads.

  7. Road Capacity:  Increase the traffic capacity of the roads by widening the single lane roads into intermediate or double lane roads.

  8. Road Connectivity to neighbouring States.

  9. Road Connectivity to neighbouring Country.

 

Public Works Roads Department (PWRD) in Assam, India is responsible for the development and maintenance of the state’s road infrastructure:

 

  1. Construction and maintenance: The PWRD builds and maintains roads, bridges and culverts.

  2. Road network management: The PWRD manages the state’s road networks, which includes state highways, major district roads, urban roads and rural roads.

  3. Flood and Landslide restoration: PWRD restores damages caused by disasters such as floods and landslides.

  4. Road Safety improvement: The PWRD works to reduce road accidents.

  5. Road furniture installation: The PWRD installs road furniture and provide road safety measures to make the roads accidents free.
